Having a new winter hair care routine is essential for maintaining healthy vibrant hair through our cold, dry months. During winter the combo of cold air outside and heated indoor air strips hair of moisture. This leads to dryness and makes hair more prone to brittleness, split ends, and static. By adopting a winter-specific hair care routine, you can protect your hair from all these seasonal challenges and reduce the damage that dry air, low humidity, and temperature shifts bring.

Moisturizing is particularly crucial in winter months. Hair tends to lose its natural oils faster in cold weather leading to dryness and breakage. Switching to a hydrating shampoo and conditioner, as well as incorporating leave in conditioners and deep conditioning treatments can help keep hair moisturized and manageable. Oil is one of the best ways to seal in moisture in the winter (hair and skin!) By maintaining proper moisture levels, hair becomes stronger, smoother, and more resistant to winter weather conditions.

Protective styling and avoiding excessive heat treatments are also vital for winter hair care. Wearing your hair in loose braids, and buns can reduce exposure to cold air and friction from scarves, hats, or sweaters. In addition, reducing the use of heat styling tools like straighteners and curling irons can prevent further moisture loss and reduce the risk of heat damage. If heat styling is necessary, ALWAYS apply heat protectant to minimize the potential harm.

Lastly caring for the scalp is equally important as caring for the hair itself! Cold weather leads to dry flaky skin on the scalp which can cause itchiness. Regular scalp massages with nourishing oils like jojoba or tea tree oil can help improve blood circulation and add needed hydration. Fun fact, this is a service we provide here at the salon! Using a gentle shampoo in these months will help too by not stripping the hair of essential oils. By maintain scalp health, hair is better supported to grow stronger and longer even during the harsh winter season.
